Lucebert  (Amsterdam, 15 Sepember, 1924 - Alkmaar, 10 May, 1994)

 

Swaanswijk, L(ubertus) J(acobus)
Dutch painter, draughtsman, printmaker and writer. He first trained as a painter and decorator with his father. In 1938 he spent half a year as a student at the Kunstnijverheidsschool in Amsterdam where Mart Stam was the director. During World War II he did hard labour in Germany. In 1947 he decorated the Franciscan monastery in Heemskerk and in 1948 he had his first exhibition, of drawings. He contributed some poetry to the second issue of Reflex, the mouthpiece of the Experimentele Groep and in 1949 he joined COBRA, although for only one year and mainly as a poet. He submitted poèmes peintures to the Cobra exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam (1949). Between 1951 and 1956 he published six volumes of poetry.
